MAN ACT

(England)

Jimmy Messiah

One of the most important and successful theater companies to have emerged from Wales in the last decade. Since 1985 founders Simon Thome and Phillip Mackenzie have created on impressive body of work which has been critically acclaimed across the globe. MAN ACT create distinctive theatre which fuses raw physicality and powerful language. MAN ACT'S world has never been easy. Its themes are utterly contemporary, urgent and honest. It's about men and the uncomfortable world men share together. It's about the horseplay, the homophobia and edgy brutality that goes with male bonding. It's sometimes embarrassing, shocking and disturbing. But even in its darkest moments it is a potent mix of stylish choreography, humour and poetic imagination. "Jimmy Messiah" represenls the second piece of the companys second trilogy of work. Audiences last saw them in "Call Blue Jane", a darkly ironic satire on pinstripe wheeling and dealing in the modern age. Il follows the fortunes of Jimmy who is a rock star. If you think like a rock star, life will always be a close-up. So before he packs it all in, Jimmy's last gift to the 20th century will be a rock benefit for the people of Russia. Or has he just come back from Moscow? Or is it all a rehearsal for something which is just never going to happen? You see there is the problem of his son. He has just turned up demanding an explanation as to why he walked out on his wife. "Jimmy Messiah" uses the language of rock and roll with all the ferocious irony it can muster. The dancing is wild. The searing sound track throbs with the sweat of it all. In a night club at the end of the road, "Jimmy Messiah" is about two men nervously reclaiming the space for compassion and sensual expression. It is about the love between fathers and sons, a love that passes all understanding.
